Day 40 – Going from Leland to Frankfort

We are down to just Michael, Jeanne and me. Danny has joined the world of land lubbers.

This was an interesting adventure (as Michael called it). We were the last transients out of the harbor. I think I know why.

So we head out with a course to get around Pyramid Point, Sleeping Bear and Point Betsie.

Conditions are pretty calm and as we get out we have the sails up watching freighters coming through the Manitou passage. Michael identifying the type of Ore Carriers.

We see a strange Tug boat contraption that I have included two pictures of. So I hail the captain especially after I notice a huge rope trailing behind his tug two vessels and a really long rope. Turns out it is dredging equipment and he is towing 2000 feet of dredging pipe under water. We almost get snarled up in it as we go close to take a picture. Exciting.

We went in close to The Sleeping Bear Dunes. There were quite a few people climbing down the dune. Not sure how they planned to get back up the hill.

The winds start to blow up. Of course the winds start to move around until it is on our nose again. So we take the sails down. We are going to wind up doing this five times over the course of our adventure. Thankfully we have the furling main. Over the next several hours ( it took us 8) the waves went from 1 – 3 feet, to 2 -4, then 3 – 5 and finally 4 – 6. So wavy!

We continued to try to sail every time the winds allowed. Peen honin handled the conditions like a champ. There were a number of times the bow came down hard (bang!) but all was well.

it was a real adventure and sitting hear listening to Cream Strange Brew and the lyric “like a boat in a raging sail” comes up. It wasn’t quite raging but it was exciting.

We are sitting here in the Jacobson Marina listening to good music and enjoying a cold one and Jeanne’s Charcuterie.
life is good!
