Day 18 – Landed in Leland

We finished our first crossing. As usual the wind shifted and we had to go back to motor sailing. We landed at 6:00 Eastern time. So 10 hour crossing.

To quote our neighbor “the seas were quite lumpy.” It was pretty cool to go by the South and North Manitou Islands and through the Manitou Passage to Leland.

Jeanne and I know Leland as well as others, because the two Races to Mackinac that we did not complete because we chose to drop out and get ice cream in Leland.

We dropped out of the first one due to 6 – 8 foot waves. The second one we were becalmed for 12 hours. Ice Cream sounded good.

It appears that Leland, once again was stolen from the Native Americans. It became a fishing town and had an area called fish town. It also seemed to be involved with iron production.

We just got here and are staying for two days. Our friends Dion and Jamie are coming from Harbor Springs to visit tomorrow. We will see them again when we get to Petosky on Thursday.
