Day 46 – Saugatuck
Interesting attribute of Saugatuck is it is on the Kalamazoo River and it is way upstream. If took almost 30 minutes to get to Singapore Yacht club. So you ask why Singapore? Turns out that a bunch of New York Speculators built a town called Singapore in the 1830s when lumber was king. It was located on the confluence of the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michigan. They wanted it to rival Chicago. It didn’t work out and Saugatuck was built. The town of Singapore eventually returned to the sand. See the plaque below.
Saugatuck was a nice town / harbor area. They actually still have some older cottage style houses. People were friendly, met a number of folks including a runner from the Bond Pit (back in the day). All in all, I recommend it.

August 10, 2023I have been to Saugatuck. It always reminds me of this poem — I have no idea when/where I first heard it:
Phoebe B. Beebe and her new canoe canal in Newgatuck near Sawgatuck, Connecticut.
Google it. I also learned she was a chimpanzee, the live-in-girlfriend of J. Fred Muggs, the monkey on the Today Show in the mid-50s with Dave Garroway. Okay, cue the jokes about how old I am. No, I wasn’t watching the Today Show when I was three-years-old.
