Day 9 – Departing Egg Harbor to Sister Bay

We are are leaving Egg Harbor today, getting a slow start. Going to fuel up and pump out (empty the waste tank). I’m getting old so everything is a little sore in the morning, especially my hands. Oh well. Sister Bay is 2 1/2 hours north of here. So we have time. But! No wind, literally the flag is pointing down. Oh well.

One of our followers suggested that I put a little history of the destinations in the blog. So here we go. There are many theories on the source of the name. Here is the one that I like the best.

The most convincing story was recorded by one Elizabeth Baird of Green Bay in her journal and printed in the Door County Advocate decades later, when the town was founded. On June 23, 1825, Mrs. Baird and her husband were returning by boat to Mackinac Island with a party of French fur traders. They camped at Egg Harbor for the night, and the men coming ashore began to throw hardtack at each other from boat to boat, escalating to eggs when they began to run low on biscuits. “Never did any one enter with greater zest into any sport than did the gentlemen on this occasion,” wrote Baird. When the food fight “ceased for want of ammunition,” the shoreline battlefield “presented a strange appearance, strewn as it was with egg-shells.” The next morning, “speeches befitting the occasion were made by most of the gentlemen, and the place was formally christened ‘Egg Harbor,’ the name it has ever since borne.”

It’s a beautiful harbor with lots of boats anchoring instead of tying up at a dock. We ate at the Mezzanine restaurant a short walk from the harbor. Food was good with a rooftop deck, but no protection from the sun and the inside seating was pretty warm.

I am going to post some pictures of the inside of the boat after we cleaned it later on as we need to get going.

Signing off for now.
